For the past year, I have been going to downtown Providence to tutor Dipsika, a second grade refugee student originally from Nepal. The first few times the other tutor, Bernadette, and I went we brought chocolate and candy down for Dipsika and her sister Dikchha. They have come to expect this from us now, and the horror that ensues when we neglect to bring candy is just not worth the headache.
We tutored yesterday and – being the day before Valentine’s Day – we obviously had to up our game. I brought a huge bag of conversation hearts (which we also used as a handy teaching tool – making sentences and creating color fractions). We used maybe five or six of these throughout the tutoring session, and in the end I had approximately a million conversation hearts leftover to carry around with me in my bag.
I was finally able to get rid of them today though. I put them in a bowl on a table in the dining hall for the rest of the school to enjoy. Happy Valentine’s Day, and good riddance!!!
